Last night Mathias Kunzli played a deep solo set of music at Joes - TopicsExpress

Last night Mathias Kunzli played a deep solo set of music at Joes Pub at his CD release party. It was really one continuous piece. He told me to watch the clock and at 40 minutes in get up and join him, which I did, on prepared guitar and electronics. At the end of the half the audience rose to join him onstage with instruments and singing the lyrics to a beautiful song about snow which he wrote. These were people from many different aspects of the international music community that I play in and there was love in the room. That 40 minutes went so fast. There was such grace in the way he explored sound through percussion and sound objects onstage. He looped the sound in a way that let the audience into how he thought about sound and rhythm. His playing is joyful, exploratory, direct and generous. His training as a percussionist and jazz drummer was obvious in the non obvious but direct ways he set up his ideas and flow. You know, the thing about NYC, is that there are impressive musicians and you know them and you work with them and they do their job in the context you are playing with them in which is sometimes your context as a band leader but then you see them in another light, in another situation, which is sometimes their own context as their own band leader and you think.. damn.. DAMN and get on another level what great musicians they are. As Mathias says, here in NYC we are just passing the baton of inspiration back and forth, each musician inspires the other. Mathias compositional percussionist who a joy to watch and joy to play with. Thank you. This is video is from the start of his set in which he was just getting started...
