Last night Peter and I were out buying hundreds of peel off lid - TopicsExpress

Last night Peter and I were out buying hundreds of peel off lid food cans for the homeless distribution this coming Saturday. We had just gotten a load full of warm coats from Sue and Dale Belzer, when we came across a guy soaked by rain asking for some spare change to buy a hot coffee to warm up outside the dollar store. I pulled out a few toonies I had in my pocket and gave them to him and then Peter remembered about the warm coats we had just gotten and offered one to him. In the dark we pulled out a blue and white waterproof mens jacket the man tried it on and felt instant warmth, and we gave him a few cans of food for later. As we pulled away we could see how he could not believed what just happened. These are the simple things that each and everyone of us can do to help those in need around us. Nobody wants to be out in the cold and rain begging for change to stay warm. Later last night we had to run to Superstore to pick up a few things and came across another man named Don, Peter and I approached him to see if he was hungry and said he had not really eaten since yesterday, so we told him to follow us into the store and we went straight to the deli department, along the way we asked him if he wanted a hoodie to stay warm, he said that they were to expensive and then we asked him if he wanted gloves, he said gloves would be nice and when asked which ones he would like, he said the cheapest ones. So I picked out a warm scarf and mitt set for him. We then proceeded to the Deli and asked him if he would like a roasted chicken, he could not believe what we were asking him, we got him a hot coffee as well from the deli, and he said that this was the best Christmas present ever, he did not even ask for anything at all, people just cared for him, not because they had to, but because they wanted too. Through talking with Don we learned that he worked in a airplane manufacturing plant most of his life and about 9 years ago was in a terrible accident at work that compressed his spine, he lost everything and he never thought this would happen to him, he worked so hard his entire life and everything had just not gone the way he thought it would. He asked if we could walk him to the door because he thought the security guard would give him a hard time. As we said our farewells we shook his hand and said that it was a pleasure meeting him. Peter and I then went back into the store to collect the few items we had come for and when we finished and had gotten back into our car we drove around the corner and we saw Don and he was sharing the roasted chicken with two other men that were hungry. This shows you that whatever gifts we are given no matter how small, sharing with those in need is truly a gift in itself.
