Last night Windsor City Council decided to end their controversial skunk trapping program. The pilot program had been launched last year against the advice of city staff, the Humane Society, and the Ministry of Natural Resources. Council decided to maintain the educational part of the program, which means that homeowners who have concerns about urban skunks will receive information and advice about how to discourage skunks from remaining on their property. You may notice fewer skunks around this year than there were last year but that isnt due to the Citys pilot program. There was an illness called distemper that caused the skunk population to decrease naturally. Last year the Humane Society took in more than 200 sick, injured, orphaned, or DOA skunks compared by this time last year compared to only 17 this year, clearly demonstrating clearly that the population was experiencing a temporary peak which mother nature self-regulated.
