Last night, acting upon Ians suggestion, we ate out at the new UP - TopicsExpress

Last night, acting upon Ians suggestion, we ate out at the new UP Town Center. First impressions: I like the ambiance of UP Town Center, but its rather sad that its being built on what used to be UPIS. Also, It gave me the same feeling as walking in Rockwell: that many of the people there look at you from head to toe, class warfare in action. It may be just my paranoia and middle-class Cubao upbringing kicking in, but what the heck. We ended eating in this newly-opened resto, Red Onion Cafe. It was on soft opening, so we had to use cold cash. The 39 Spices Beef Noodle Soup (Spicy version) was a great find, along with the unlimited noodles (which had some extra soup to go with it, as well). We chose the 1/2 beef and 1/2 tendon option, rather than all-beef. Id say its worth the price (about Php288), though the whole 39 spices thing somewhat merged into a blur of taste. And I had to order more chili oil (free), since the spicy part was not spicy for Alex and I at all. We also had shrimp dumplings (Php168) for appetizers, and I can honestly say they have to work on that, as it tasted somewhat bland, even with the accompanying sauce. Needs more herbs and spices - but not too much, just a bit more. Service needs some work, but Im giving them a free pass since its still in soft opening. In all, it was a very filling meal, but Id say that they need to do something about the 39 spices thing, and the whole spicy claim. As for the unlimited noodles, Id say that Red Onion Cafe is a great place to go to if you appreciate good taste and big noodle servings. Would I suggest it to friends? Yes I would, but only with the caveat that youve got to love noodles. If youre more for the beef, then sadly, the unlimited noodles will not be a plus factor.
