Last night as key note speaker at a lovely benefit gala for Israels superb University of Haifa, I urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to defy expectations and follow in the historic footsteps of another hard-line Israeli prime minister, Menachem Begin and jumpstart the peace process in the Middle East. Having covered almost every outbreak of war and mayhem in the region for the last 40 years, and heading back to the region next week, I understand how volatile the Middle East is right now, particularly as ISIS and other Muslim extremists rage wretchedly across nearby Iraq and Syria. But that is precisely why Israel should take a chance on peace with the Palestinians right now. It would undermine one of the radicals main arguments for waging war and spreading mayhem: the oppression and occupation by Zionists of land the UN designates as the future Palestine. A good place to start would be a unilateral announcement that Israel will impose an immediate cessation of all settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank. Take a chance for peace, Mr. Netanyahu. Menachem Begin did.
