Last night at Isha at the Masjid, I met a brother. He has a wife who is chronically ill and an ill disabled mother in law too. But his own child/ren well and not ill. So he had to give up his job and is tied all the time looking after his chronically ill wife and disabled old mother in law, plus his child/ren. You can imagine brothers & sisters, a modern atheist/secular society Muslim or non-Muslim would have been depressed on medication if they were in this brothers place. Moreover they probably would have dumped the old mum in law into old peoples home. But this Muslim practising brother is neither depressed nor running away fr his responsibility, rather he is fine and looking after them all. Barakallahu feehim. What is the difference between this type of proper Muslim versus a secular/atheist mind-set modern Muslim or non-Muslim? One thing is that a proper Muslim realises that this life has absolutely no purpose except to be open to trials thrown at us by Allah and to face these trials cheerfully with good deeds. Whereas a modern day Muslim or non-Muslim expects this life to be Paradise and so when trials strike them and prevent them from their out-of-place dreams, they cant handle their dunya dreams dashed and as a result become depressed or at least bitter and regretful. Lets keep in mind brothers and sisters that many of our mindset is not fully Islamic and it that which makes us shrug from our responsibility and be sad or bitter in life. As for the brother I met at Isha last night at the Masjid, his expectations from life are consistent with reality of this short life of tests and trials to do good deeds, and nothing can ever knock him down, depressed, or bitter, inshallah, barakallahu feeh. Lets learn life from reciting and reflecting on the meaning of the Quran, and Hadith of the Prophet (s) from Riyadusalihin, etc. And not from TV nor our unlearned modern Muslim friends. That man at the Masjid is an ordinary guy, and yet MORE HAPPY and HELPFUL than the wealthiest, coolest, hottest, thrill seeking modern atheist mindset Muslim or non-Muslim people. - Sheikh Aslam AbuIsmaeel
