Last night at about 10pm the Lower Hillside Dams spilled - the first time in years. I popped down this morning to see the glorious sight they present. A good friend Ilan Elkaim reminded me, in commenting about the Upper Dam spilling, of the wonderful words contained in Isaiah 55:9-13 and I share them with you all here. As the heavens are higher than the earth, So are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and snow come down from heaven, And do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, So that it yields seed for the eater, So is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire And achieve the purpose for which I sent it. You will go out with joy and be led forth in peace; The mountains and hills will burst into song before you, And all the trees of the field will clap their hands. Instead of the thornbrush will grow the pine tree, And instead of the briers the myrtle will grow. This will be for the Lords renown as an everlasting sign, Which will not be destroyed. Our beautiful land has been ravaged by very poor politics over many decades - politics which have violated all Gods fundamental principles. We have discriminated against people because of their race, we have resorted to violence at the drop of a hat, we have corruptly stolen national resources, we have turned a blind eye to the plight of thousands dying from Aids and other diseases and we have employed hate speech against each other. These rains are not just Gods blessing but also a reminder that Gods word, His principles, set out in books like Isaiah, are as timeless as the rains and will not, in the course of time, return empty. Applied to Zimbabwe that means that we must not lose hope about the future of our country. God has not forsaken Zimbabwe - but we as a Nation need to start taking His word seriously, because as a Nation we have drifted perilously far from Gods desire that every nation be ordered and governed fairly, honestly and justly.
