Last night at the PTA meeting, to augment Officer Anemelos - TopicsExpress

Last night at the PTA meeting, to augment Officer Anemelos presentation on internet safety, I briefly mentioned concerns that persist about NYSEDs refusal to vet and/or guarantee the material they post on EngageNY and their website. The discussion was about making parents aware that even legit sites cant always be trusted to provide appropriate material for children. CT recenty launched a CC website of their own. The hall mark difference between CT site and NY is that while Commish King issued a disclaimer to defend himself and denying liability for material provided on EngageNY and stating in writing that NY cannot gurantee the quality nor can they assure accuracy, in CT Gov Malloy states in writing that the material provided on their website has been fully vetted by the State with CT guaranteeing the quality and accuracy of the same. In this article, a CT educator examines the perplexity of a 1st grade EngageNY module that seems to make children and parents apopolyptic as to the sum and substance. The author finds the curriculum staggering, overly complicated and highly scripted. Which begs the question, if NYSED refuses to vet its material before posting, what are our children actually being taught and is it appropriate? Who is checking for accuracy, age appropriateness, mistakes...not NYSED! They have already issued a blanket disclaimer and have hidden behind terms of use defense. CCSS also disclaims responsibility for the content of their material bc remember CCsS is a standard, not a curriculum. So, who is responsible for the content of the CCSS curriculum? As to Spack, I believe our teachers attempt to craft their own lessons and they try not to use EngageNY modules. That said, I like to remined you that CCSS are COPYRIGHTED and cannot be modified above a small percent by educators when used in teaching. So, in essence, its notvthat easy to reword a script that you are legally bound to follow. We have to give our teachers credit. Given the harsh reality of NY contractual obligations and the breadth of Kings/Regents/Cuomo lack of concern for our students, they seem to be doing the best they can within the confines of his majestys rule. usedbooksinclass/2014/02/15/perplexed-in-ct-by-recommendations-for-engageny-curriculum/
