Last night at the School Board meeting.......... The School Board approved the consent agenda which consisted of the monthly maintenance report, student membership report, monthly financial report, overnight trips as per IICA-CCPS-R, policy committee notes, donation agreements which will allow the CCHS band to procure another much needed covered trailer, child advocacy network agreement, school crisis plans, Title I, II, III updates, SOQ compliance report, approval of minutes from meetings held 7/22, 7/25, 8/12, 8/19, 8/28. There was an approval of the policy agenda. Demolition at the old high school has begun. Two of the four students that participated in the Valley Health Initiative spoke to the benefits of the program. The new Student School Board Member and alternate were introduced. Breanna Leach will sit on the board this school year with Aly Kerby as her alternate. The Superintendent is working to get a Food Service Benevolent Fund underway. As it stands, students are allowed to charge up to $5.00 even when their balance is at $0. If this happens, there is a robo-call made to the family home. There are currently an average of 100 robo-calls made per day. Ms. Biggs spoke about the STEM program. She is looking to launch a Story Time From Space project. There is a STEM Career Fair this Friday and Saturday at the Dulles Town Center Mall. She is looking to possibly team up with the Summer Arts Academy and hold a Summer STEM Academy in 2014. SOL results were reviewed. Clarke has met all accreditation requirements for the state, but not federal. IB results were reviewed. Mr.Potts reports that the number of IB diplomas has doubled and the number of IB tests taken have also doubled. Educators are taking compliance and educational trainings through Education Consortium on Personal Development Days. There is a project underway with Clermont Farms and the Clarke County Farm Bureau. CCHS FFA will be working in coordination with Clermont Farms to care for pigs. The feeding floor has been purchased and will be ready to deliver to the farm this week. Some bus routes were deemed inefficient. School Administration is looking into modifying the school boundaries. This would also affect the budget. There may be a need to cut teaching jobs to cover the cost if the budget gets cut again in the coming year. New boundaries along with less educators would increase teacher:student ratios at DG Cooley with closer to 25-27 students per classroom. Boyce could see classroom sizes closer to 17-20 students. There were no audience comments. It was approved to move forward on the Parent/Community Survey for Superintendent Evaluation.. The donation agreement was approved for the Marching Band Tower (Eagle Scout Project). The Opportunity Educational Institute Resolution in Opposition was tabled for a later date. The Resolution on High Stakes and Standardized Testing was accepted. The Finance Committee set meeting times; the third Wednesday of the month 8:30am at the school board building. The School Board voted to opt out of the VRS plan for disability. They will contract with a private company that has better rates. The Superintendent will ask Board of Supervisors use the FY13 Budget Carry-Over to fund instructional technology and school safety considerations. Authorization was granted for expenditures on instructional technology capital purchases of a tablet cart, 30 tablets, 30 Otterbox covers, and 10 document cameras. The School Board approved the preliminary plan and there will be further research and planning on the Boyce Water/Easement Proposal. Berryville Primary School now has new steps and final masonry work will be completed this week. The CCHS site plan amendments will be discussed at a special School Board meeting that was tentatively set for Monday Sept.30th due to the very long list of items that need to be reviewed and time constraints last night. Meeting was adjourned at 9:15pm.
