Last night at the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies: Rethinking the European Security and Defence Policy: The future of the EU’s security and defence policy presents the Union and its member states with a number of complex challenges. In light of shrinking defence budgets, the intensification of international cooperation, when it comes to the development of new and expensive military capabilities or conducting operations, appears unavoidable. Furthermore, the European Commission seeks the liberalisation of the fragmented European defence market as national procurement can no longer sufficiently maintain the technological and industrial base of this market. In parallel, the crisis in Ukraine and the recent increased fighting in the Middle East have demonstrated that Europe has to find coherent policies to cope with security challenges within its neighbourhood. Finally, as an overall issue, the question of the relationship between NATO and the EU has not been resolved in a satisfactory manner, with arguments and positions of EU member states widely differing.
