Last night during our drill session we practiced our branch techniques for use when compartment fire fighting. There are three different techniques that we use to deliver water within a compartment fire: SHORT PULSE - This is demonstrated in the first two pictures. It is used by us to help protect ourselves. It is produced by opening and closing the branch very quickly. The fine spray produced is very effective at cooling the combustible gasses which reduces the likelihood of fire spreading through the gas above us. LONG PULSE - This is demonstrated in the 3rd picture. The narrower cone of the water is directional and allows for us to make progress through a hot smoke logged compartment by cooling the area we are moving into. As the name would suggest the branch is left open for a slightly longer, around 2 seconds. PAINTING - This is used to put fires out and is demonstrated in the final picture. Although you can throw the water further away from you than is shown it is not intended to be used over great distances. All of the techniques we practiced they are designed to use as little water as possible. Excess water turns to steam and this would make the environment less survivable for all inside.
