Last night in NYC, at a venue booked by a friend of mine (The Studio at Webster Hall), a fan tragically passed away from injuries suffered in a stage-diving accident at a Miss May I show. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends, everyone at the venue, the band, and the NYC music community. It brings to mind, however, a bunch of questions in my mind about the safety of stage diving and crowd surfing. When I was younger and about 80 pounds lighter, I crowd surfed a ton, and at Fusion Shows, our general policy is to kind of allow these things to happen and just cross our fingers that everyones going to take care of each other. The hardcore/pop-punk scene screams for shows with no barricades, so stage diving is possible. Last years La Dispute show at the Crofoot was sold out with 1100 people, and we didnt have a barricade. This year, we did, and I dont think it affected the show negatively for anyone. In fact, it was probably great for the 200 or so kids at the front to not have to constantly be on the lookout for a 200 pound human missile flying at their faces. Whats your thoughts on stage diving, crowd surfing, etc? Remember, someone passed last night, so lets keep comments respectful, and keep in mind the insurance and liability part of this conversation when we discuss.
