Last night my grandfather passed away. I was only 11 when they married and he always treated me like his own grandson. He loved to cook in abundance and was genuinely disappointed when you didnt take something home. He wouldnt take no and l suspect thats part of why he fed 20+ cats that found there way to a meal on his back porch. He loved organ music and loved playing the calliope in parades all over Eastern Kentucky. He loved people, and, my God, did he love my Gran. He was a Sigma Alpha Epsilon from UK back in the 40s and was thrilled when I pledged that same fraternity. Until the very last time I saw him he would always insist that we use a secret SAE handshake. I am proud to have know Graden for 25 years and will never forget his laughter and defiant pride. When the tornados came to West Liberty in March 2012, he sat at his kitchen table through the entire ordeal almost invoking the storm to come at him. He was stoic in the face of adversity and as warm as anyone I have ever met or am likely to meet in the future. I will miss you, Graden!
