Last night, our monthly Western-watching group met at my house. We looked at FLAMING STAR (1960), starring Elvis Presley, directed by Don Siegel. I hadnt seen this before and was very impressed by Elvis as an action hero, doing most of his stunts in extremely physical situations. His character is part Native America, part white. During a war between the factions, each side wants his fighting skills. Very violent, as we would expect from director Siegel (DIRTY HARRY). . . . Our group consists of Johnny D. Boggs (multiple Spur Award winner from Western Writers of America), Tom Clagett (former film editor of classic TV shows such as ST. ELSEWHERE and award-nominated author of THE PURSUIT OF MURIETA), and Robert Nott (who worked with noted Western novelist Max Evans on Maxs recently published memoir GOIN CRAZY WITH SAM PECKINPAH). Our other regular participant, Kirk Ellis (Emmy-winning writer/producer of HBOs JOHN ADAMS miniseries) is in warm Palm Springs for the winter, as opposed to cold Santa Fe.
