Last night seen the under 17s play in a 10-a-side match against Ardnamurchan on the All weather pitch in a wet and blustery Strontian. This match was arranged as a warm up for the WJ Cameron round robin in Inverness on Saturday. As short notice was given there were call offs from both sides. Balla were missing the tenacious Ryan Macintyre from defence and Fraser Blair was working. Right from the off it was clear that the lads were not nearly as focused as the were at the Macauley sixes in Oban, finding it difficult to raise their game and adjust to the surface and lights. At Half time, Balla one nil up, coach David Campbell asked the lads to keep the ball down and play smarter, make the easy pass and keep the ball in play until a clear goal scoring opportunity arises. The lads went out and there was a clear difference in style of play. There were fine saves from both keepers, though the Ard #1 had more to deal with, Cameron Sutherland had an outstanding save from distance that could have been lost in the flood lights but was expertly plucked out of the air. Ally Banks was stern at full back, and never put a foot wrong. Alistair MacDonald and David Malcom done the tidying up and clearing from defence. Cian McPhee had a quiet game at Center, he played some great through balls, had some forceful runs, but we didnt see the commitment and tracking back that we know he can do at senior level. Craig McLaughlin had a great game, intercepting, tackling and turning defence into attack as a winger should. Jack Maclean was on the other wing and put in a solid shift, and got a goal to cap off a great performance. Tyler Murphy had one of his best games so far this year, creating space and linking up well with the other forwards. Patrick Maclean was closely marked by the very promising Matthew Bradley, but still managed to skip around the Ard defence a couple of times but found Gregor in the Ardnamurchan goal in great form. Lewis Bryson had a good game, making the defenders life difficult and popped up in typical fashion to ram home the opening goal from close range following a rebound. Looking ahead to Saturday the 9th of November, we will be facing tougher competition, which will require us to raise our game. Jack has until Una washes her tights for Pat to wear on Saturday to enjoy the bragging rights in the Maclean household. Well done Lads!
