Last night the AHEPA District 13 Governor George Miller and Region - TopicsExpress

Last night the AHEPA District 13 Governor George Miller and Region VI Supreme Governor Nick Kavadas visited Little Fort (Waukegan) chapter 218. The Honored guest was AHEPA Supreme President Phillip Frangos. The AHEPA Supreme President updated the members on the upcoming year programs including going in depth to support the St. Nicholas Shrine in NYC at ground zero and reminding everyone that AHEPA is a grassroots organization where each chapter and member plays a critical role in the organization overall success. The AHEPA Supreme Governor went into more details on the goals he has challenged each district and chapter to meet for the upcoming year. The AHEPA District Governor expanded on increasing membership and details on the format of chapter meetings and finances. The AHEPA District Secretary Themis Frangos and son of Supreme President Phillip Frangos reminded the members that Chapter 205 is hosting a Hellenic History tournament on November 15th at Loyola law school to benefit the youth in our community to not only learn about Hellenic history but also have the potential for the winning team of three to win $3,000 dollars. The chapter voted to donate $250 dollars to the program. Overall the meeting went very well with just under 30 AHEPANS in attendance. Also, the chapter initiated one new member who is a Philhellene interested in advancing the progress of AHEPA and its mission. The Supreme President gave the oath. On display at the meeting were original newspapers from Greece dated October 28th, 29th, 30th 1940. Those dates may ring a bell since October 28th is OXI day. OXI day is the day Greece said NO to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini to allow axis forces to enter Greek territory and occupy “strategic locations”. The ultimatum was to allow this entry or face war. October 28th is around the corner so the President of the chapter brought in these ORIGINAL newspapers to remind everyone of this critical and very important date in Greek and World history. Finally, do you know why AHEPA Chapter 218 is called Little Fort? The reason is because this chapter meets in Waukegan and the Potawatomi Indian word –Waukegan- means Little Fort. The name Waukegan was approved in March of 1849 by the residents.
