Last night was my first time performing a solo piece on stage--by far, the most exhilarating and terrifying thing Ive done. To compare performing to something physical, it felt like being thrown around in the ocean, when the waves hit you so hard that you lose control over your own limbs. Numb to the senses, stiff as petrified wood, and as vulnerable as a soldier disarmed on a battlefield, you (I) felt naked on the stage. Words penned in ink are safe; words seen on a screen are comfortable. Words articulated, point by point, as air escapes from our throaty caverns to the turbulent tip of the tongue, are dangerous. Fear left me with nothing to hide behind, but the stage serves also as a precipice. One that Im still climbing toward, though--I recognize that theres a lot of stage space left to fill. Last night wasnt what I expected, but THANK YOU to everyone who came out, all the crazy (cool) people who performed, and to the organizations who put the event all together. When my voice fell flat, you stuck it out. When I couldnt find the beat, you still listened. When I tripped over my own tongue, you were still there. To Jordan, Sam, Scott, Peter, TJ (and your sister!)--cant say enough about you all. Hearing you all get so into your sets made me forget myself, and dancing with you all off-stage felt so GOOD.
