Last night we faced the possibility of losing our pecan crop to a hard freeze BUT thanks to the hard work of Dad, Jake, Chad, Coach and others AND thanks to all our friends and family for sending up lots of prayers we were able to save the majority of our trees!!! Farmers use lots of techniques to keep the heat in including what you see in some of these pictures. We set small controlled fires throughout the orchard (thank goodness we were no longer in a burn ban) and we water our trees (thank goodness for irrigation and well water). The smoke from the fires keeps heat in and a wet freeze is better for plants than a dry one. As of noon today I got a FABULOUS report from Dad saying the trees looked really good and we could expect to have another great crop of pecans this fall! Whew!!! God is good!!! Always!!! Thank you to everyone who thought of my family and other farming families last night. We appreciate your thoughts, kind words, and especially your prayers!
