Last night we toted a woman that was post overdose from a smaller facility to a larger hospital. She was hallucinating and the like when we got there but on the way she dropped her oxygen level and breathing rate to about 4 times a minute. I did what any emergency provider, nurse, medic or junkie would do and gave a small dose of a reversal agent called Narcan with te hopes of restoring her breathing without her beating me. Well, she woke up , threw up and began screaming and carrying on like the lady that was deemed too evil for the part Karen Blair played in that Exorcist movie. I gave her Zofran for the vomiting but she kept screaming at me for water (which I didnt have and she wouldnt have been able to have anyway). When I told her this and asked if she could tell me her name she told me it was FU** OFF. I asked of that was a first name or a first or last name, and you are welcome for saving you life. You can imagine how well the rest of he trip went. We arrived at the ICU and our lively conversation continued to the bedside. I gave report to the nurse , whose name was Noah. I gave report then told the patient her nurses name was Noah and if ever there was a man who knew about water it was Noah. (the nurses smiled and one laughed a loud.) The lady asked Noah for water as we were moving her into bed, he said ,not yet until the doctor sees you. Can you tell me your name?. She looks back at me and screams, Can you tell him my name is FU** Off and I want some water. I replied no maam, I believe he, as well as most of phoenix heard you..... I hope this morning that Noah got at least a cup of coffee or breakfast from either the Toxicologist or the charge nurse as I am sure his night was long...Additionally, I hope Mrs Off is feeling better and got her water...Nursing is the best job in the world , in particular emergency and critical care nursing, and im proud to be a part of the sister and brotherhood...And sometimes we have a choice to either laugh or cry. I chose to laugh.....Gnight youngins.
