Last night while Liz was visiting her mother for dinner, I had the house to myself. And I took advantage of that solitude to watch a film that is so brilliantly written and directed I never tire of watching it. That film, directed by Academy Award winning director Kathryn Bigelow is Zero Dark Thirty, and if you have never seen I highly recommend it. Make no mistake, it is graphic in the extreme in its depiction of the means and methods used to interrogate the terrorists held in CIA Black Site retention centers and some may find it offensive for that reason alone. At first blush many assume the film to be about the actual mission, however in point of fact it is much more about the men and women who worked for years stitching together the facts with the assumptions and guesses to find Bin Ladens hiding place in a compound Pakistan, and plan and execute the mission. Ms Bigelow is no stranger to the subject matter of war, her film The Hurt Locker capturing the Academy Award for Best Director. Quite simply the film is a masterpiece, and this ties in with the series I have been enjoying on HBO, The Newsroom in that an episode from season one entitled 5/1 the date on which the mission took place, depicts that night in the Newsroom as journalists worked the phones and their sources searching for confirmation as to what subject the President would be addressing the nation on that night. If you have never seen the film, I highly recommend it, although again be forewarned the images early on are not for the squeamish. As to the The Newsroom it too is a remarkable piece of filmmaking and for all of you who enjoy fiction that tends to the cerebral side, I once again highly recommend it.
