Last nights Eric Garner news prompted me to write about the importance of accepting reality as it is, instead of turning away from difficult things and hoping the turning away will make them go away: [I]t is only by taking in what actually is that what is can become what was. Commenter Elizabeth wrote, I want to compliment your post, but I don’t think that’s what you want. I think you would like us readers to pledge to look hard at truths and act in a way that ensures everyone’s welfare. I pledge to do that. Chris (From the Bungalow) wrote: I, too, pledge to take in what actually is. I will not cover my eyes, ears, and mouth. But I will also protect my heart and innocence–and by extension, my family’s well-being–by seeking balance in my life and in what I read. Its so easy to feel hopelessly small in the face of enormous injustice. What can any one person do to effect change? Im working on that. In the meantime, Elizabeth and Chris remind me that our acts of connection--our commitment to see others as they are and as they struggle--is the foundation for change. I dont know what change is next, but I am hopeful. Our power is in our connection. Tonight, as I tearfully take in pictures of tens of thousands of people coming together demanding change, its clear there is no perfect path to change. Fortunately, neither change nor people need to be perfect in process to be perfectly beautiful. [see comments for more]
