Last nights city council meeting was very interesting! - A gentleman (sorry, I didnt catch his name) from the Silverado area spoke about Yard Masters and the plastic covered want ads that are tossed at houses (vacant & occupied); - Monica Villa spoke about the Art Hop & Love Merced; - the Brown Berets & a Ms. Castillo were in attendance supporting Ms. Ruiz & Ms. Gonzalez who spoke about ending police abuse; - Athena Waddle spoke about the AT&T closure. She asked residents to send letters to AT&T asking them to reconsider closing the local business: AT&T 1125 Kansas Ave., Modesto, CA 95351 You can contact Ms. Waddle at: athenawaddle.cwa9333@yahoo (I think); - Mr. Frank Delgado spoke about how things could be addressed in a more timely and friendly way by city staff & councilmembers. He also spoke to over 200 UC Merced students about whether or not they were being profiled by police & recommends Merced start a Police Citizens Awareness group; - Peter Howell, UC Merced student will be organizing an area Clean Up (with help from Public Works) on August 27th, from 9AM till Noon with a BBQ afterwards for those who help. I didnt catch his email address, but it may be [email protected]... Mr. Howell needs co-sponsors. - Mr. Rick McMillion spoke about schools & churches not having to follow the watering rules, how a couple of local schools need to fix their watering systems, and he thanked Chief Andrade & the Disruptive Awareness Response Team (DART) for their work downtown. He also doesnt think 2-hour parking should be eliminated downtown - in general. *Agenda stuff... Also interesting... The Mayor mentioned anyone with Anthem insurance cannot access care at the hospital - unless it is a life-threatening issue - until Anthem & DH come to an agreement.
