Last nights movie was Girl With A Pearl Earring. Wow! This is a great film--only 3 Academy Award nominations and not one in the acting category. Ill admit that the design and photography are wonderful, but Scarlett Johansson is SO good as Griet and Colin Firth is truly amazing as Johannes Vermeer. There is so much going on inside a movie that appears fairly placid. Each and every shot is filled with something amazing. This film is based on a novel by Tracy Chevalier that tells the story behind the painting Girl With A Pearl Earring by Vermeer. Entirely fiction, it tells the story of Griet, a maid who goes to work for the Vermeer family. Her beauty captures the attention of the painter and his patron, who demands that Vermeer paint a portrait of her for him. The examination of class structure and wealth in Holland in 1665 is so subtle that a casual observer might miss it, but it is the core of the movie. Even if you dont like this kind of deep thematic development, you will love the portrait of 17th century Holland and the use of color and form to create one beautiful picture after another. It certainly does a service not only to Vermeer, but all of the classic Dutch painters from that time--and it says a great deal about domestic life--then and now. I HIGHLY recommend this movie.
