Last printing finished before Christmas so off down Bedruthan - TopicsExpress

Last printing finished before Christmas so off down Bedruthan Steps for a mooch! Nothing like a moody mid-winter walk down there to see whats new! I met up with an old friend (Scott) in the carpark and off we go. Down the staircase and this time off to the north, Into an old adit of the old iron-mine workings, as far back as I could get, covered in red iron-stained mud and sediment! Lots of plastic, timber and general rubbish is on the floor everywhere, lichen and sludge on the walls. Water constantly flowing down from the workings above me. Out of there and on to Samaritan Cove, theres some wood washed in but nothing to shout about, no one about, just the wind and the guls. The Good Samaritan was wrecked in this cove in 1846 with the loss of nine lives. The local population benefitted from the tragedy by salvaging her cargo of silk and printed cloth. About 12 years ago I came across a piece of the ship, a very heavy timber with an iron eyelet and some iron strapping on it. I spent half a cold day in February dragging it across to the staircase and then I had to get my friend Wayne to assist in retrieving it up the staircase. It now lives in my porch! See photo with bottle for scale! On to Queen Bess Rock, battered by storms and looking a little worse for wear these days and into the big cave before Diggory,s Island, the one where the massive buoy is, or should I say used to be! It must be twenty years ago that the big yellow buoy was washed in there. Now there is not much left. Some warn and torn steel plating and a few long cylinders that were once welded through the middle to attach chains and ropes! The spring tide is on its way in so we return the way we came. Ill be back soon, theres always something new to see down in this timeless stretch of the coast.
