Last season we planted a Barbados Cherry and a new Chinquapin Oak. - TopicsExpress

Last season we planted a Barbados Cherry and a new Chinquapin Oak. Neither plant appeared to have survived the winter. I was sorely disappointed. The Cherry was a lovely shrub with light pink flowers and tiny Cherries. Lucky for both plants, I’m an observational gardener. Some might call it lazy. I’m willing to wait. Yesterday, it paid off. I noticed a new shoot peeking up out of the mulch at the base of the Cherry. It looks as though it prefers to make its entrance well after any hint of frost or freeze is long gone. The Oak has also stirred. A tiny leaf bud has appeared about half way up the truck and a new sucker is coming up from the base. This is not the ideal growth pattern, all of the other young trees are fully leafed at their crowns and looking pretty strong, but I’m willing to let this one be if it’s going to make this much effort. It may not grow up to be the tallest tree in the forest, but it will have character and it will be a survivor and it will be celebrated.
