Last semester I taught quite a few ideologically challenging texts - TopicsExpress

Last semester I taught quite a few ideologically challenging texts in my Introduction to Literary and Cultural Studies class. As can sometimes happen, a few students had strong negative reactions to the material. Though I believe in what I do, I care about my students and I always question myself when they react badly to a text and/or discussion. I had one student, in particular, who was not interested in probing certain issues (in this case, gender). I talked with her, in office hours and in class, many times over the semester about her concerns and discomfort. Just today, she sent me a message: Hello Dr. Dunning, Before things picked up for the semester, I wanted to take a moment to genuinely thank you and let you know how much I appreciate how hard you pushed me in 298 last semester. There were more times than I can count that I considered dropping your class and taking it with another professor -- someone easier, who caused me less anxiety, who didnt push me to wits end. But I am so incredibly glad I didnt, because I would not be where I am as a student, a writer, and a human being if I had. It was your class that taught me how to properly argue, and stand up for myself, and ask for help. So, truly, thank you, Dr. Dunning. *** I dont post this as boast...but more to encourage myself and others in the difficult work we do. Students may not always like what we bring to the table in the moment, but if we maintain the integrity of our academic mission they may one day come to value what we do.
