Last summer, Manchester United‘s very public pursuit of Barcelona’s Cesc Fabregas was an unprecedented move by the club as over the years, we traditionally kept our cards close to our chest until the very last minute. After two failed bids, our pursuit failed and Fabregas pledged his future to Barcelona in embarrassing fashion for United but thanks to reports from El Mundo Deportivo before the transfer window has even opened, the speculation has been rekindled. They suggest Barcelona are now willing to listen to big offers for Fabregas following a trophyless season in Spain and that Manchester United are willing to go back in for him. Unless David Moyes and the board are willing to genuinely front £40 million+ offer straight away, we shouldn’t waste our time with Fabregas this year. Yes he’d be an incredible signing but what’s the point getting excited about the prospect of him joining because previous windows have taught us that getting excited too soon leads to disappointment. Of course, Barcelona’s transfer ban currently stops them from signing any players this season but it doesn’t stop them selling any. After the debacle of last summer, we can ill afford to waste our time with fantastical pursuits of unattainable targets if we aren’t willing to stump up the cash. The last thing we need is another circus this summer as before it has even started, wild rumours have reared their ugly head. This could be a long few months.
