Last week, CityLink activated an upgraded system that will stop over-height trucks from entering the Burnley and Domain Tunnels. Over-height vehicles hit the tunnels on average once a month, causing safety hazards, long traffic delays and damage to tunnel infrastructure. When an over-height truck approaches the tunnel, the system will automatically reduce speed limits, close lanes, activate red traffic lights and lower boom gates. All traffic will be stopped for a short period while CityLink crews safely direct the offending truck to exit at the nearest ramp. We thank you for your patience during these incidents. We believe the short closure is preferable to the safety risks and extensive delays caused when over-height trucks cause damage to the tunnels. One incident last year closed two of the three lanes in the tunnel for more than 4 hours.
