Last week, E-61 performed a rescue on a patient that was found unconscious and trapped in a vehicle that was on fire. The vehicle swerved off of Highway 101and landed in the dry creek bed near the intersection of Camino Arroyo and Sixth Street, where the vehicle sparked a small vegetation fire. With the driver still inside and a grass fire building in intensity involving the vehicle, firefighters immediately jumped the chain-link fence and checked the car for occupants. The driver was found locked inside the vehicle, unconscious with moderate smoke inside the vehicle. During the extrication of the patient, it was noticed that the fire was growing under the vehicle from the leaking fuel tank. CHP officers assisted E-61’s crew in carrying the patient up the slope of the creek. By the time the crew moved the patient halfway up the slope, the car became fully involved in fire. A full first alarm was called for the vehicle and vegetation fire. Because of E61’s quick response time and sound decision making, they were able to rescue the unconscious occupant from the vehicle before it became fully engulfed in flames. Once at the top of the creek with the patient, E-61’s and Rural Metro’s Med 52 personnel quickly assessed and packaged the patient and loaded him into the ambulance for transport to the Emergency Room.
