Last week I drove from the North Circular to Barnet. During this brief journey I went past five, yes FIVE Tesco stores. That’s five stores in the space of a 3-4 mile journey - that’s a Tesco store about every 1100 metres - and this is in the London suburbs, it’s even more dense as you go into town. . Now you may think this rant is going to be about Tesco - and those of you who know me well, will know I have had more than my fair share of run-ins and altercations with them in the past (including being ejected and barred from one of their numerous outlets) . But this rant is not about Tesco, it’s about YOU. Yes, that’s right YOU! - You know who you are, the one who complains that there are no pubs left as Tesco has taken them over. - You know who you are, the one who complains that there is no choice on the high street as it’s all Tesco. - You know who you are, the one who wishes that the old greengrocer, butcher and post office were still where Tesco is now. . But I say again - it’s YOUR FAULT… Why? - Because you are the one who despite all of the above, still ‘pops’ into Tesco Express rather than the grocer over the road. - Because you are the one who doesnt like the grocer over the road simply because he is Albanian. - Because you are one who lives for your clubcard points - that the grocer doesnt offer. - Because you are the one who never complains when their fresh meat goes off after 48 hours, unlike the butcher’s. - Because you are the one that cares passionately about our suffering farming industry, right up until you can go to Tesco and save £0.03 on a pint of milk. - Because you are the one who when I call you, your voicemail says “Welcome to Tesco mobile” – TESCO MOBILE for f*ck’s sake! . I no longer moan about Tesco. I don’t like it, but I accept that it is a money making machine designed to provide maximum returns for it’s shareholders - that wont change. Only YOU can change the face of our high-street. But you probably won’t. Because you’ll be too busy snapping up the latest 2 for 1 deal in Tesco Express. . So my final plea to YOU is - why not try your local shop today? Give them a moment of your time - after all, every little helps.
