Last week I mentioned the Scottish Varsity match – St. Andrews v Edinburgh – which was to be played at the home of London Scottish in Richmond. In an upset of the form book, the Fife seat of learning beat their capital rivals by 22-15 with Sean Murchie, one of five Stew Mellies in the victorious team, scored their opening try. When one considers that Max Campbell was injured and unavailable for selection, the red yellow and gold must have had considerable influence on the result! Particular congratulations to Will Kesley and Scott Docherty who made the XV in their first year of under graduate study. We can only hope that all this talent, when they have finished university or are on holiday, will return to Inverleith. Something we have to work hard at! There were numerous Stew Mel players representing other teams on Saturday but this is another story and one we can hopefully also address as quickly as possible! Still on university rugby, in the first round of the BUCS competition: St Andrews 1 13 08 Dundee 1 Aberdeen 1 42 08 Napier 1 Stirling 00 34 Glasgow 1 Edinburgh 2 06 20 Strathclyde 1 Heriot Watt 1 L L Abertay 1 QM 1 24 29 Glasgow Cal 1 Aberdeen 3 21 14 Stirling 2 Dundee 2 14 18 Heriot Watt 2 St Andrews 2 10 00 West of Scotland 1 Aberdeen 4 03 72 Glasgow 2 Edinburgh 3 18 17 Strathclyde 2 Dundee 3 L L Scot Rural 2 Scot Rural 1 L L Edinburgh 4 The F.P. Mighty 3’s crossed swords with the Nails on Saturday. I enjoyed Kempy’s summation of the game. He claims that despite losing 50-30ish, it could have been a win and that the front row (naturally of which he is a part) emerged with their battle honours intact and in the ascendency. There are some well known faces in the team (including Bruce Gorrie, Ben McGlinchey and Ali Scott) but such is their stamina that new recruits and returning superstars are always welcome. I watched a very young F.P. 2nd XV produce a spirited performance against Stirling County (lost 12-20). Usually, I am stuck behind the camera but, playing my seniority card (yes – I have a bus pass!), coach “Cakes” delegated the subs to temporarily relieve me of my duties. When players of the quality of Nick Whittle, Nick Kesley, Matt Hutcheson, Scott Cubitt and Jonny Gilfillan are coming off the bench one can only assume that the starting XV is competitive and so it proved. With a little more belief and confidence, Stirling could have been defeated. Euan Bowen, looked enterprising at stand-off (although I would implore the club officials to find a replacement for his white socks!) and was well supported by Andy Warnock at inside centre. In the pack, Nick McGlinchey was excellent and Matt Hutcheson showed real promise when he came off the bench. However, it was a team effort and if this group can stick together and improve both their technique and game management then the future is bright. They are playing in a very difficult league where Premier Division opponents, because of the professional draft, can bolster their back up teams. I am sure that the players will get behind Primmy (who has done a great job as team manager) and coaches Duncan and “Cakes” and with real determination wins are just around the corner. Go for it boys! Games against Hillhead/Jordanhill have recently filled me with some trepidation and, indeed, last season they deservedly did the double over the F.P. 1st XV. I was delighted, therefore, that Aileen Hughes (the medical support for the 2nd XV) was able to keep me informed (via Twitter of which I know nothing!) of their progress throughout Saturday afternoon. A bonus point victory (31-13) with 4 tries from Struan Allan, Ruaridh Stewart, Sam Rowlands and Neil Bowie was great news. Sadly, Gav Calder was not able to provide a report on the web this week but a visit to the opponent’s site suggests that SM played with some control and authority. Hopefully, confidence, as displayed against GHA and Boroughmuir, is slowly returning to the team. Despite winning only one out of three, I felt that the buzz had returned to Inverleith. I hope that I am right. Next Saturday’s (5th October) fixtures are: 1st XV v Dundee Inverleith 1500 2nd XV v Glasgow Hawks Inverleith 1500 Mighty 3’s v Linlithgow 2nd XV Inverleith 1500 Here is a great triple header. Please come and support either as a player or a spectator. Last Saturday the school 1st XV played Edinburgh Academy and emerged as 23-12 winners. I have to confess that this was not one of their greatest performances but it was good enough to overcome our near neighbours and both teams produced some excellent tries. As the “Scotsman” pointed out we have now defeated Edinburgh rivals- Fettes,Watson’s, Merchiston and Edinburgh Academy but, sadly, the latter three are still in the Brewin Dolphin Cup while we will have to console ourselves with the Shield. In truth, all these wins have been extremely close and the boys will have to work really hard in the return fixtures. However, we can rest assured that coaches Lockie and Moran will be pushing the players to maintain their standards and improve their performances. I also had the pleasure of watching the D1 and D2 XVs playing the Royal High School and Edinburgh Academy respectively. The latter scored some excellent tries in their win, but RHS played with great spirit and determination. Compared to our boys they are new to rugby and few will doubt that they can become increasingly competitive as they learn the game. The former, losing at the interval, produced a rousing second half performance to score three tries up the hill and finally come home by 15-3. Again, this was a very evenly contested game and nothing can be taken for granted in the return fixture. Enjoyable rugby on a sunny morning!
