Last week I read an article where Keyshia Cole stated that she would never disallow her sons father from seeing his child no matter how bad things got between them, and while the sentiment is nice, its crazy that it even had to be said. It seems nowadays any discussion about co-parenting will inevitably lead to a gender war, but I think that occurs because far too many of us are approaching the reality of raising children from a bitter, scorned-lover point of view, instead of looking at the other parent as a partner whose mental health is a benefit for the child(ren). The truth is, the system is set up for mothers to be afforded unequivocal rights which is all good, until the father’s rights begin getting stomped all over. I DON’T want to hear about what XYZ baby-daddy did, or what ABC absentee father did, because those stories are officially becoming redundant. While deadbeat dads exist, their neglect shouldn’t be used as the barometer for all fathers, especially when there are many great men who want to be active in their children’s lives. thisisyourconscience/2014/03/more-women-should-advocate-for-fathers-rights/
