Last week Marine Corps Gen. John F. Kelly, the commander of the U.S. Southern Command, told an audience at the National Defense University that they are monitoring the spread of Ebola, and he also expressed some concerns about what an outbreak in Central American countries would mean to our southern border. With the Ebola virus now having a mortality rate of 70%, up from 50% a short time ago, and with infections predicted to increase in the next several weeks to over 10,000 per week, a travel ban that I called for along with other members of the Arkansas delegation is the most prudent measure we can take in light of the current conditions. With a second healthcare worker also testing positive for this deadly disease, we must implement this travel ban for public safety and for national security.
