Last week, Penn State announced that they would be borrowing $30 million to subsidize the athletic department because of the NCAA sanctions. Those costs are going to be felt by ALL students in the form of a tuition increase. This week, the NCAA restores football scholarships but doesn’t address the size of the fine or other financial penalties (no post season revenue). Wasn’t the point of these sanctions that Penn State had a culture of “football first”? Doesn’t the restoration of football scholarships instead keeping costs low for the students interested in an education send the wrong message? I love Penn State and the education that I’m receiving, and I don’t mind the people who PSU love football. However, we should keep the fact that it IS a secondary aspect of a college education in focus.
