Last week, a member of the public brought to us a lovely young dog who had been wandering the streets near their home, very scared and nervous. Fortunately, the dog was micro-chipped! And we were able to reunite the dog and owner within hours of the dog going missing. From 6th April 2016, by law all dogs in England will have to be micro-chipped. Dog owners will need to: •Have their dog micro-chipped and registered on one of the authorised commercial databases •Register the details of any new owner before they sell or give the dog away •Keep their contact details up-to-date on the databases The microchip is very small, approximately the size of a grain of rice and is implanted just under the skin between the shoulder blades. The microchip carries a code unique to you and your pet. This code is scanned using a hand held device and entered onto a database containing your contact details and information enabling to successfully reunite you to your pet! The introduction of compulsory micro-chipping is a positive step in encouraging responsible dog ownership and to help tackle puppy farming. For more information or if you would like to book your pet an appointment to be micro-chipped, please do not hesitate to contact the surgery.
