Last week friends lost their daughter weeks before she was due. Years ago a couple I performed the wedding for lost their son in the ninth month of pregnancy. I still remember standing there in the hospital, tears slowly dropping, watching him rock his son while explaining the football game on the television and how if he had lived that he would have taught him how to play the game in the front yard. Ive had new friends and old friends tell me they lost a child prior to delivery. It happens more than it should and more than we know. As a minister and as a friend its the only time I have nothing to say that can ever remotely make things better. Theres nothing to say that will ever help it make sense. But, I do know that ignoring the existence of the child and their grief is not the answer. Be there. Allow them to grieve. Follow their lead. Help them find support. If youve walked that journey, be there for others and walk their journey with them. Allow them to reach to you at their own pace. God will help you walk them through it. The men grieve as well, but many times fail to allow themselves to do so. Men, if youve walked this path, please extend a hand to another man too afraid to grieve. Every child. Every child. Every child. No matter how long they may be on this planet will forever leave a mark on this world and will forever be in the hearts of their parents. Be there for them.
