Last week in my ethics talk to law enforcement officials I asked - TopicsExpress

Last week in my ethics talk to law enforcement officials I asked if any of them had ever heard of Platos Republic. None admitted that they had. I then explained the first talk when Socrates dispels the most simplistic and most wrong definition of justice within a democracy: justice is the advantage of the stronger. This logic is what gives police in this country the validation to shoot non violent protestors in Ferguson, MO with rubber bullets and fire tear gas at journalists. I did not get the sense that my talk was well received, although some agreed that a genuine community policing model would help us. Community policing has the potential to redistribute the power thats been consolidated by police and that exacerbates racial and other tensions. But we are going to also need to have more serious dialogues about race, inequality, and privilege before communities will be heard.
