Last week, our community suffered a deep loss. Our beloved teacher, Dave Oliver died. He leaves a legacy with all of us, in all of us. There isnt a yoga class in town that isnt a diluted form of his teachings, his stories, his adjustments and his cues. He was the teacher of teachers, yet a self-proclaimed non-guru. I think thats why I loved him so much. Ive always had an issue with authority, I dont like it, he didnt either (as his friend confirmed yesterday). He understood us guru-skeptics, because he was one too. He said what he wanted to say, did what he wanted to do, taught how he wanted to teach. He was himself, completely himself, thats why others trusted and learned from him. All of his students have been leaving messages of their memories with Dave, so heres mine. One day after class, Dave said, Come here, sit down, I want to show you something. He took out one of his white dry erase boards and wrote the word, Svadhyaya. This is what you do, you know? With your writing. Its important. Keep doing it. You are using your highest mind, meditating when you write. Important stuff. Svadhyaya means self study, thats what I do when I write. Svadhyayad ista-devata-samprayogah ~ II. 44. This is one of my favorite Sutras. It means, Self study deepens ones connection to his or her personal deity. Writing connects me with my soul, its my way in. Thank you, Dave for hearing me loud and clear. Heres my new piece. ~Rebecca
