Last week, our fridge started making an odd noise every few minutes. We were concerned, but as it kept working unimpaired, we shrugged and re-resolved to buy a new one around the end of the year. Friday, it started warming up. We took advantage of this to get rid of a number of expired items and moved the rest into coolers. Simultaneously, we called a repairman. He was out on a call, so itd be an hour or so before he could arrive, but he was willing to come. So a bit after 8pm on Friday, he showed up. It didnt take him long to diagnose the noise as being what Id feared it was: the compressor trying and failing to start up, followed by the relay clicking off. He cleaned out years of accumulated cruft from around the compressor and plugged the fridge back in. It worked.
