Last week students of Columbia Law School went out and joined the protests concerning Michael Brown and Eric Garner. You know, the Hands Up, Dont Shoot and I Cant Breathe protests. They insisted that their professors cut them slack for missing their final exams. They were, they assured us, in such emotional distress that they just couldnt take it anymore. William Desmond, a third-year law student, wrote this: Our requests for exam extensions are requests for our faculties and administrations to recognize that this movement IS our legal education—that when we march, when we advocate, when we demand accountability and action we are employing the analytical skills and legal knowledge that we have learned in our law school classrooms far more than we would be if we responded to a hypothetical exam prompt. Dont you just hope that some day Mr. Desmond represents you in court. He wont be able to make an argument, but hell protest the hell out of the system for you. Today a headline reads: Naked Columbia student plunges from roof, survives. We dont know many details yet, but rumor has it that this was a student who hadnt been given sufficient trigger warning about some icky word or distressing idea in one of his assignments. He fled to the buildings roof, tore off his clothes, and did a Peter Pan into the shrubbery below. A faculty member, Ive heard, is being held in custody for failure to attach the necessary sticky notes to offensive materials. These kids today, they just care so darn much, and carry so much of the white mans burden.
