Last week, the California Exposition and State Fair Board of Directors named Winters farmer Craig McNamara the 2014 Agriculturalist of the Year. Craig, who also serves as president of the California State Board of Food and Agriculture and on which Sustainable Conservation ED Ashley Boren serves, received the award for his demonstrated leadership and tireless dedication to responsible land stewardship. Craig was also honored with the California Leopold Conservation Award, co-sponsored by Sustainable Conservation, in 2007 for his crucial role in protecting the environment by using tried-and-true organic farming practices and innovative technological on his 450-acre walnut farm, Sierra Orchards. By investing in such technologies as tailwater ponds, sediment traps and hedgerow plantings, Craig ensures no irrigated or natural water is wasted. Sierra Orchards walnut production and sales have steadily increased, demonstrating the integral relationship between economic success and sustained conservation.
