Last week the Congress passed a $10.9 billion bill to keep the Highway Trust Fund solvent until next spring. Interestingly, a recent poll indicates that nearly 60% of Americans oppose raising the federal gas tax to fund highway construction and maintenance. Even more people are against putting these projects in private hands and twice as many folks oppose a usage tax based on the number of miles driven as those who are for it. And most surveyed dont want to make state and local governments pay for these projects. Yet 60% said good infrastructure outweighs the costs to taxpayers. So we all want these things, just dont want to pay for them?
