Last week, the New York State Assembly unanimously passed a crucial bill that will protect patient and practitioner rights. This legislation is now before the Senate. Yesterday the Poughkeepsie Journal wrote an article about it (see the link below), explaining that the bill will allow doctors to treat beyond the 2-4 weeks of antibiotics recommended by the Infectious Diseases Society of America without fear of punishment from the professional disciplinary system--which is important--but really and fundamentally, this legislation is about patients’ rights. In an uncertain scientific environment where thousands of people do not get better after the recommended 2-4 weeks of antibiotic treatment, patients rights are paramount. Patients should have the right to work with their physicians and, with informed consent, receive the treatment of their choice. Until we have better diagnostics and therapeutics, we will continue to vociferously push for legislation that empowers patients to access all evidence-based treatment options. #LymeDiseaseAwarenessMonth poughkeepsiejournal/story/news/health/lyme-disease/2014/05/17/lyme-bill-pending-senate/9231037/
