Last week, the Southeast Coast Exotic Plant Management Team - TopicsExpress

Last week, the Southeast Coast Exotic Plant Management Team (SEC-EPMT) came up from @CongareeNPS for their annual visit to treat Phragmites australis (European reed) infestations. Phragmites is a tall, perennial reed that forms dense monocultures in wetland areas, which quickly crowds out native marsh plant communities and is unusable as habitat for animals. It can take up to 5 years of annual herbicide treatments to eradicate well-established infestations of the plant. For this year’s visit, the team worked with park staff and treated a large roadside patch of Phragmites south of Avon and a new infestation at the northern end of the Salvo Day Use area. The treated plants should begin to brown and wilt within 1-2 weeks. See photographs of the team at work on our Flickr site: https://flickr/photos/capehatterasnps/sets/72157644271853117/.
