Last week the Workplaces (Protection from Protesters) Bill – - TopicsExpress

Last week the Workplaces (Protection from Protesters) Bill – also known as the “anti-protest” bill – was passed by Tasmanian parliament. The legislation imposes mandatory fines and prison terms on protesters who are deemed to interfere with the operations of a business. While the intended effect of this legislation is to allow loggers to go about their business without the interference of environmental protesters, anyone who speaks out against the status quo has reason to be concerned about these laws. This legislation is reflective of efforts by both state and federal governments to silence dissent instead of addressing widespread criticisms of a range of business practices, including animal husbandry techniques. This includes the movement towards #aggag legislation (See goo.gl/0Cmkop) and the criminalisation of dissent. Learn more: goo.gl/qjuHM2
