Last week we blogged about the Home Affairs Select Committee’s scathing report on the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which painted a bleak picture of an overwhelmed body incapable of delivering the necessary scrutiny – not least of deaths in custody. That must have struck a sombre chord with Liberty client Janet Alder, whose brother Christopher choked to death while police officers watched, chatted and joked at Hull Police Station in 1998. None of the officers faced any criminal or disciplinary penalty. Janet was, however, able to turn to our human rights framework to seek some justice for her brother, and today we explore her story in the latest in our Common Values series of blogs and short films.
