Last weekend I finished 2nd place in the 1 day 75 mile Hellhole Gravel Grind outside of Charleston, SC on my Schlumpfed KH 36er! There were 9 other bikes in my class of Mens Open and I finished 4th overall of 17 total bikes doing the 75 mile race. The soggy course was laid out in the Francis Marion National Forest and consisted mostly of hard pack sand/gravel but had plenty of loose gravel, energy sucking mud, several sections of single track and a few miles of pavement. It wasnt the longest race Ive done but by far the most difficult! Rode my geared KH 36er, 150 cranks geared up the entire time except for the single track portions, KH T-bar, Shimano Deore brakes, Fyxation pedals, Todd Tire @ 40psi and of course the awesome Fusion Zero saddle. At least a dozen crashes but no injuries or cramps, no mechanicals and was as comfortable as you can imagine bouncing and bumping along an off road course for 75 miles, haha! Battled knee pain most of the ride, ran out of water twice, very limited support with only one aide station halfway through, rode alone 90% of the time, official time was 5h16m32sec. This was a well organized and great event and Im sure I shocked others as well as myself with that finish. Rode the 33 mile course last year (ungeared Oracle 36er) and only beat a few bikes. Also very proud of my wife who finished 1st in her Womens Open 75 mile class on her bike!
