Last weeks intergenerational conversation on race, co-sponsored by - TopicsExpress

Last weeks intergenerational conversation on race, co-sponsored by the YWCA, the Asheville/Buncombe Community Relations Council, and OLLI at UNC Asheville provided a wonderful opportunity to hear the different ways that different generations experience race and experience the conversation about race that has evolved in the wake of events in Ferguson, Staten Island and elsewhere. Thanks so much to OLLI members Cindy Berryman-Fink and Carol Rogoff Hallstrom for taking part in this conversation. That conversation gives particular resonance to these comments by Harvard sociologist Sar Lawrence-Lightfoot, author of The Third Chapter: Passion, Risk, and Adventure in the 25 Years After 50. She says in this article from The Wall Street Journal that the knowledge that intrigues me the most flows from the young to the old. How do you take the time to learn from the young? What surprises you about the lessons they are teaching us?
