Last year I visited the excellent Shackleton Exhibition in Dun - TopicsExpress

Last year I visited the excellent Shackleton Exhibition in Dun Laoghaire and was shown around by Donal ONeill who gave a fantastic presentation on the story of the Endurance expedition. Its a must see collection of images and memorabilia from the most epic survival and rescue mission in history, not just polar. Its also a place that, despite its title, pays homage, not just to The Boss but to his crew and Tom Crean fans are served well as his image is scattered throughout the displays. Yesterday, We posted a set of four images conveying how the men entertained themselves between missions and it reminded me of a story Donal told me of during my visit. Among the pastimes, the crew enjoyed, was a game of footie on a polar pitch, as depicted below. As a defensive tactic used to prevent the other team hitting the back of the net, a certain Mr Crean, would wrestle an opponent striker to the ground and sit on him until the danger had passed. Now this tactic had two benefits, it prevented the opposing team scoring and it left them a man short as your own team sailed up the polar pitch to slide one into your opponents net. Not sure if there was any referee participating but if there was hed be a brave man to penalise Tom Crean dont you think?
