Last year I was recruited to be a Youth Friend for the USD 361 on the grade school level. I was paired with a wonderful 3rd grader named Scott. We met once a week for at least an hour during school hours. Since I like to cook, we made his lunchtime on Tuesday’s our time to meet and enjoy time alone to eat, visit, laugh and play games. We have a few things in common too,….we belong to the EMAW Nation, the outdoors and like me he likes SPICY food. Never too hot for Scott!! This morning, Kathie Kersten had a beginning of the new school year meeting/breakfast to introduce the newly named Runner Buddies and to explain how the new program will work, the same type of program as last year, but with a new name. This morning we were to bring a friend who might be interested in also becoming a Runner Buddy to hear what we do. I know most everybody has a busy schedule, but to take one hour out of your weekly agenda to spend with a young one to make their day is more rewarding than you can imagine. You can set the time you meet with you Runner Buddy to fit your working schedule. Back when I attended Washington Grade School (way back, a long time ago), Youth Friends, now Runner Buddies was unheard of because single parent families were few and far between. Today, there are young kids waiting, wanting and asking Kathie for a Runner Buddy Mentor. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer one hour a week to a young one who needs a new friend, Runner Buddies will be setting up a booth at the Harper County fair in the Blue Barn. Drop by and talk to Kathie, get details and sign up for this coming year. Or call and ask for the school counselor at the Anthony or Harper Elementary Schools…….
